I would say ok quality but not crystal clear as in Carribean/Hawaii or Mexico. Water quality: not as muddy as in Galveston. Great if you bring you own food for a day trip and enjoy literally next to water. Nice gazebo/ picnic tables/wooden tents present in this place only. Real restroom is at nearby office only and always crowded. Both has places to clean up seawater (open showers) and restroom is a portable, temporary plastic one. Entrance fee is $5/person/per day - unless you have TX state park pass ($70/year). No picnic table available, although you can sit on tables near the office with partial view to the sea. Outdoor showers present and there is covered shower/changing room/restroom pretty close to beach. Looks like better value and you can also enjoy may be more wildlife, up to 50 miles to drive (with 4WD) on the natural beach and camp wherever you want. Entrance fee is $10/vehicle and good for 7 days - unless you have annual National Park Pass or Senior Card for NP. Both places are on the same "barrier island" where north to South Padre Pwy is called Mustang Island and south of it is called Padre Island. I do not know why Mustang Island State Park is listed under Port Aransas whereas Melaquite (Part of Padre Island National Park) is under Corpus Christi. Overall, I'd say it's a good park to go to check off your list & move on to your next destiation. The nature guys on TV make it look so fun BUT we were scared. Late in the afternoon when the tide was low, my Wife & I were finding Sand Dollars past the first sand bar in waist deep water, to our surprise we saw a 3 foot Black Tip Shark. No lifeguards were present.ĭon't go when the winds are out of the North or the wind is fairly mild in late August. Park Rangers patrol the area on ATV's from time to time. I was impressed with the beech wheel chairs that are availaable for those with mobiity issues. The park is isloted enough that you don't have a hotel or pier obstructing your vistas. We just wanted to swim & lay out in the sun. This is a family park you don't have to worry about "spring break " type behavior. If you make camp during a low tide, you may be very annoyed when the tide just works it way through your camp during the next high tide.Nice beech by Texas standards, clean facilities with a conveiece store, showers, sand rinse, picnic tables, education center, tours. If you set up your camp at the height of a high tide you will know just how high the tides come ashore. If you go before summer starts it will less rowdy.īeware of the tides. If you go on a weekend do not have any expectations of quiet or solitude. Port Aransas Beach may be worth checking out, you need a $12 seasonal permit to park/camp. Bring "Yard Guard" or "Off Outdoor Fogger" with you. It is remote, not very rowdy most of the time. There is not any space between high tide and the marshes, so you would be basically camping on an old highway that has been destroyed by the hurricanes. Be prepared to get stuck and to dig your way out. (just kidding!).īut seriously, I would not go to McFaddin beach unless you all have 4 wheel drive. They will sleep under your car and then get you when go to your car. Getting towed out on a desolate beach can be expensive.Īlso, do like alligators? Alligators can eat you on McFaddin beach. The beaches that not cleaned are less crowded, but you may get stuck easier, and may not have any cell phone coverage. Seaweed really is an obnoxious mess.Īlso beach houses overlook Crystal beach, and nothing overlooks McFaddin beach. That can make a huge difference when camping because the seaweed stinks. No drift wood, no fishing nets, or trash, lot of trash cans, very easy to walk on, and thusly attracts a LOT of people.Īlso the cleaned beaches are not covered in seaweed. For example, McFaddin beach is not cleaned, lots of drift wood, etc, but just down the road, Crystal beach is cleaned and it is almost sterile it is so clean. I would walk barefoot on a cleaned beach, but not on an unmaintained beach. The cleaned beaches are so much easier to enjoy, less trash. Some beaches are cleaned, such as Crystal beach, others are not cleaned and are just a real fking mess. Take baby powder with you to remove any tar you get on your feet. There is nothing worse than waking up to a tent full of sea water. Many beaches look inviting, but there is not enough space between the sand dunes and the high tide mark to make a good campsite.Īlso, the moon and the weather will affect just how high a high tide goes ashore.
